Cold case
Renae, an eighteen-year-old girl, was walking back from the library when she started to feel a presence behind her. She turned around, afraid of what was following her, but nothing was there, just some leaves falling from the trees. It was pitch black and a cold night. She tried to shake off the feeling and quickly opened her door. Renae called out for her brother, William, but there was…silence. She couldn’t shake off the feeling that someone was watching her. She looked outside her windows and made sure to lock the doors. Renae kept dialing her brother’s number, but he didn’t pick up. She heard a crash and then went to investigate. Renae covers her mouth. Her best friend Penny. Her throat was tied with a rope, and she wasn’t
breathing… Renae covers her mouth; with trembling hands, she reaches for her phone and dials the town’s sheriff. Phone clicking
Hills, the town’s sheriff, arrives at the scene and starts collecting evidence that might lead to the case. Meanwhile, Renae is still shaken and can’t believe that her best friend Penny just died. William returns home at this point, and he comforts Renae. Sheriff Hill walks up to Penny. “Hello, could I talk to you for a minute?” Renae nods. “I just want to know how your friend was at your house at… this time?” Renae pauses. “Are you trying to say I killed her?! I’m her best friend, sir, and I respect you, but you’re suspecting me?!” Sheriff Hill: “Well, Ms. Renae, your friend was at your house at this hour, and there has been no clear evidence of the case, so I have to ask you to come downtown for a few questions.”
Renae is later released from the police station after questioning because of no concrete evidence. At home and unable to sleep, Renae received a chilling text from Penny sent just hours before her death. It read, “Help please, Renae, your brother hes.”.Suspicion gripped her as memories surfaced: Penny and William arguing, and William acting strangely. Driven by instinct, Renae broke into his locked room and found a folder on his laptop titled “DO NOT OPEN.” Inside were videos, including one that showed Penny’s pictures from months ago. Her face is crossed out in every picture of her and Penny. Renae is horrified; she couldn’t believe that her brother would do this. Door click Renae is startled, she quickly puts his laptop back in place. She couldn’t believe her brother would do something so horrible. She hides behind his door and quickly dials the sheriff’s number in subtle whispers. She says, “ Sheriff, I think-think it’s William, I think he -he killed Penny..” Before she can say anything else, the door opens. William sees the laptop and sits down to check it. Slowly, he calls out, “Renae? Did you see it?”. Silence.. He sighs, “You weren’t supposed to see that..” Renae speaks up in a shaking voice, “ D-Did you do it?”
William’s eyes show something dark as he looks at the laptop screen. He leans back slowly, his voice low but fierce. “I didn’t want you to find out like this, Renae.” She swallows hard, her voice barely a whisper. “Tell me the truth. Did you kill Penny?” He stands suddenly, his face looks different, as if he just snapped something off. “She ruined everything. Us. I had no choice. I had to do it.” Renae steps back, her heart pounding. “I just tried to protect you,” William says, his voice cracking. “You don’t understand. She ruined us.” His hand moves quickly, grabbing something heavy from the desk. “I have to do this.” He lunges toward Renae, and she barely dodges and screams out of terror. Renae quickly gets up and paces to the door, and William follows. He swings his bat at her multiple times, while Renae is just horrified that her brother would do this. She falls to the ground, tired of this sick game, while William just smiles. “All is well, sister.” He raises his bat but suddenly the door bursts open, “Police! Put your weapon down now!” He freezes and he drops the weapon while some nurses quickly come to Renae’s side and help her up. Sheriff Hills handcuffs William. William, “ Please, Renae I’m your brother ! I just made a mistake.. I- I didn’t mean to do this.” He keeps pleading but Renae doesn’t see him anymore; he isn’t the person she knew. The police take him away. William is taken into custody. Days later, he receives his sentence and is sent to prison for attempted assault. Renae watches from the gallery, silent. She knows the brother she once loved is gone.
